Retailers and merchants process virtual cards the same way they process any debit or credit card transaction.
The virtual card number and information is processed at checkout where the merchant sees and potentially saves the virtual card information on file.
Since you are using a virtual card, the online merchant will not see your personal financial information or funding source information; they will only see the virtual card information.
-
Use your virtual card details when checking out with an online merchant.
-
The merchant will process the transaction using virtual card details you have entered.
-
The app will charge your funding source (i.e., your personal debit or credit card) the amount of the purchase plus a small service fee for the payment processing cost. You will see the virtual cards transaction information under “Transaction details” in the app.
-
If the charge to your funding source fails (no funds, expired, etc.), the purchase will be declined.
-
The merchant never has access to your personal information; only the virtual card.
